JK Rowling didn't write Hogwarts Legacy.

Moira Squier did.

JK Rowling wrote about a short and swarthy ethnic minority legally denied the right to own certain kinds of property, excluded from most careers apart from finance, oppressed for hundreds of years but still ignored by equality activists, perceived as duplicitous and bloodthirsty, speaking a guttural language and having a culture considered inferior by mainstream society.

The film franchise gave them big hooked noses.

Moira Squier created a new character from this minority who was the victim of a brutal, life-threatening hate crime in his youth, which radicalised him against the society that oppressed his people. She wrote a narrative in which a marginalised person's resentment of their oppressors causes them to become morally corrupt, and the only "good" members of the marginalised group are the ones who can overcome that resentment. She created a story in which the protagonist must prevent a marginalised group from reclaiming their property, because doing so would make them too powerful, and that might threaten the status quo.

Troy Leavitt was the lead developer for the first several years of this game's creation. He runs an alt-right YouTube channel in which he defends cultural appropriation and sexual harassment apologism, among other things. He oversaw the design of a marginalised minority which bears an uncanny resemblance to Nazi propaganda:

Antisemitic propaganda poster depicting a Jew as a rat (caption translates to "RATS - DESTROY THEM") in profile with a large hooked nose, beady eyes, a scowl, and large pointed ears.ALT
Screen capture of Ranrok the goblin in profile with a large hooked nose, beady eyes, a scowl, and large pointed ears.ALT
"Der Ewige Jude" antisemitic propaganda poster depicting a Jewish man's head facing forwards, with sallow skin, pointed ears, a large nose pointed downwards, a heavy brow, and the corners of his mouth slightly upturned.ALT
"The Hero of Hogwarts" trophy icon from Hogwarts Legacy depicting a goblin's head facing forwards, with sallow skin, pointed ears, a large nose pointed downwards, a heavy brow, and the corners of his mouth slightly upturned.ALT

JK Rowling is a bigot, but she's not the only one.

i genuinely don’t get cishet monsterfuckers. for context, in the wake of shape of water i participated in this loving-the-monstrous type discussion event slash publishing party wherein i debuted a short story about a woman who “befriends” a cave monster—but that isnt the point. the point is i had to hear straight women talk for hours about how the appeal of monsters is some kind of weird “taming the beast” fantasy—loving a monster until it loves you back, sounding like every bad beauty and the beast take ever.

And there’s my queer ass being like literally none of you get it. this isn’t about power, this is about love and alienation and acceptance. you dumbasses, I’m the monster. this isn’t a metaphor for your shitty boyfriend, this is a metaphor for my own alienation from a society that tells me a the way i am and the way I love are grotesque. this is a fantasy of love free of judgement, separate from societal standards that I’ll never live up to anyway. that ghoul doesn’t care if I’m fat, they think it’s hot that I eat well. that immortal fae creature doesn’t care if the gender on my birth certificate matches the one I use now, they barely have a concept of gender in the first place. that tentacle monster doesn’t care if I shave, they don’t have eyes

monsterfucking is queer culture, everyone else go home

redwaltz

Oh. I'm guessing those were all yt women, too. Del Toro isn't Queer, afaik, but he -is- Mexican in the us. It wasn't really that long ago that interracial relationships were just as forbidden and taboo as Queer ones and there's still obviously race tensions going on. The other in Shape of the Water is just as much, and likely written as, being a different race and the feeling of alienation of having a different place of origin. It happens to resonate with everyone who's ever been considered a monster by society, and there's not just one way this has happened.

The whole “love someone until they're not a monster” is extra, super gross in that context because people don't feel BIPOC are actually capable of human emotions who need to be taught to be human by some benevolent yt person who's fetishised their body.

reblog this version pls

livebloggingmydescentintomadness

it’s also about being disabled, which is pretty much what the movie is explicitly about.

the main character, elisa, is unable to speak and uses sign language, and she’s very badly treated because of her disability. she directly relates to the fish man because she too is seen as a monster by society, and she loves him because the fish man doesn’t see her as broken just because she can’t speak.

of the three ‘good’ characters who help the fish man to escape imprisonment, one is disabled, one is gay, and one is Black. the movie is very clearly about those who are seen as ‘monstrous’ by society because of who they are, and also about how those people, while different, can support each other and work together because we are, in essence, the same.

Im so upset that even with all the “zero is odd” “no it’s not” stuff no one bothered to point out… It doesn’t matter. Zero, 0, zEro

thegreenpea

But zero isn’t odd. It’s fucking the lack of a number. It’s neutral. It’s empty. There’s nothing there

kayas-wife

Zero is a number.

A definition of an even number is that it can be divided by 2 and the result is a whole number. Since you cannot divide zero, you cant divide it by 2 and that means that zero is an odd number.

zEro, onE, thrEE, fivE, sEvEn, ninE, ElEven, and then the suffix -teen and every other odd number in english contains the names of the numbers 1 to 9.

endertrender

zero is not a goddamn odd number what. even i know that and i’m not good at math. also you can divide 0 by 2, it’s 0, you literally just divide it  and you just get 0 out oh my gosh. you can’t divide by zero but you can divide zero.

Anonymous asked:

I personally have put JK Rowling's books behind me for the sake of someone I care about who is transgender. It hasn't been easy. But I'm doing it.

australet789 answered:

You know, i was 13. I didnt have any friends, girl friends specifically. I was the weird kid, the one with the highest notes, the one in the band. I was an outcast. Recess was me eating next to a trash can.

You know what happened when i was 13? Twilight happened

And i wasnt an outcast anymore

I finally had something to talk about with other girls. I realized that they talked about more stuff than just boys and they realized i was more than the smart kid. I realized how hating pop music was stupid, how mysoginist it was the whole conception of just like rock and metal because that was what the boys did. I embraced liking boy bands, liking pop, fangirling over an actor and getting involved into fandom stuff. I improved my english soley because i wanted to read a Twilight fanfic that was completed in english and not in spanish.

Twilight marked a before and after for me. It formed me, it helped.

You know what i did the moment i knew Smeyer was a racist piece of shit and how much her books ruined the life of the real Quileute tribe?

image

The books i got (as a gift btw) are there somewhere collecting dust. I didnt care when Smeyer released The Host. The fandom hates her and they did their best to make her forgettable.

Everyone makes fun of Twilight. Everyone have shared at least once a post about how bad the book is or have agreeded in real life with someone about it.

We dragged her name into the mud.

The fandom makes their own headcanons. We have tried and keep trying to rewrite the whole thing. We share post after post about how racist Smeyer is.

Nobody defends her.

It was that easy.

It is that easy.

You all can do the same with JK Rowling.

You can make her forgettable. You can stop defending her. You can stop watching the damned movies, you can stop buying the books. Block her twitter, dont give her a plattaform. Treat her the same way Smeyer was: by mocking her and making her a joke.

A whole generation of teenagers did it with Twilight.

What’s stopping you all from doing the same?

Interesting the first trailer for the new Fantastic Beasts drops the day JKR once again says disgusting transphobic shit. And yet yall make the film trend and give her the smokescreen that she wants. If you support this film, especially if you’re giving it money, I don’t want to know you.

There is no excuse for supporting her work. You cannot ‘separate the art from the artist’ when the art is also full of her bigoted ideas. The HP books and films are full of her racism and antisemitism. ‘HP would be fine with JK’ is a lie. The big nosed bank running goblins are antiemetic caricatures, the only Chinese character is named ‘Cho Chang’ which are two Korean surnames and is very close to the English ‘ching chong’ derogatory term for Chinese people, there’s slaves who love being slaves and meant to be slaves, there’s the actress who played Cho being told to keep the racism she dealt with from the HP fans a secret and lie to the press and tell them it wasn’t happening, there’s the insensitivity in the Fantastic Beasts world to Native Americans, there’s making Dumbledore gay years after she finished the books and then when he’s being included in the media again he won’t be actually shown as gay, there’s her comparing werewolves to people who have HIV/AIDS, there’s her weird sexualization of gay people with her not wanting to confirm any romantic relationship between Dumbledore and Grindlewald but saying they have intense sex as if gay people are obsessed with sex, would you like me to go on?

As a child I loved it, I made so many dear friends through it, and it took years to struggle with being trans and a HP fan until I threw out all my HP stuff and stopped supporting the work. Money you spend on tickets to see the new Fantastic Beasts, or on any HP merch or Cursed Child, is money she gives to anti-trans organisations. Time that you give HP is time keeping her relevant. I don’t think people outside of the UK realise how much power she actually has here, in a country where trans hate crimes have quadrupled in the last five years, where trans rights have been repealed and set back, where politicians quote JKR and site her as if she’s a gender studies professor, that all ‘gender critical’ UK transphobes look up to her.

What she said today, about how ‘everyone who has a penis is a man and only men rape people’ is not only transphobic but just gross about cis men and women too. Cis women can be rapists. Cis women can be sexual abusers. Anti-trans people have this idea of ‘men do x bad thing and therefore can’t be women because women would never do x bad thing because women are perfect’ frankly that’s patronising towards women and a slap in the face to every woman (and person) who has been abused by a cis woman. Anyone of any gender can be an abuser. Trans women are over four times as likely to experience sexual violence than cis women.

HP was fun as a child. The nostalgia was fun as a teen. Being 23 and looking back at it now, there is no excuse to support her or to support the work itself. Cis HP fans need to understand that you liking HP is a red flag for trans people. You might be a great ally, but so many HP fans are transphobes who see JKR as some feminist god that you need to understand it’s important to make sure trans people know you’re a safe person.

You may think it doesn’t matter. JKR gets backlash for the things she says right? Yeah, on Twitter. Twitter isn’t the real world. In the real UK, most people believe and stand by her words. In the real UK it’s not safe for trans people.

This is without even mentioning the whole thing with Fantastic Beasts and firing Johnny Depp over being an abuse victim.

Don’t spend your money on it. Don’t let the trailer get views or hype. Of course you not spending money on HP doesn’t mean she suddenly stops being rich. But don’t you guys understand when you post “I’m not a transphobe BUT I LOVE HP so much and I’d buy all the books again I don’t care what she’d spend the money on” how awful that sounds? And again, putting what JKR says outside HP to the side, the books and films contain her racism. The amount of people in the HP tags who have ‘gender critical feminist’ and ‘istandwithrowling’ in their bios isn’t imaginary.

Trans and cis fans who want to like HP and understand the problems with it have to admit the problems with it, not just with JKR. And as a trans person who’s empierced shit in the HP fandom and plenty of other fandoms I can’t see a cis HP fan say ‘oh I don’t agree with JKR but’ and trust them or feel safe around them. If HP is your special interest or hyperfixation I understand, your fine. But I don’t understand the inability to let go for anyone else. Yes it took me years and it sucked but oh well. There’s so many other fandoms and media out there similar to HP. I just can’t understand a neurotypical adult’s in ability to let it go. And I would welcome a good faith explanation. But you know if transphobic replies end up here then replies are going to get turned off.
